Visus Dictionary
Mention vs citation
A mention names your brand in the answer text; a citation links to your domain as a source.
Why it matters
You can be mentioned without traffic, or cited without the brand name appearing prominently—each needs different fixes.
How Visus measures it
Visus reports mention rate and domain citation rate separately on monthly checks.
Example
An answer that says “Acme is a popular option” without a link is a mention with no citation. An answer that links acme.com while paraphrasing your guide without naming the brand is a citation with a weak mention. Different fixes for each.
Common misconception
Mention and citation are not interchangeable metrics. Optimising only for mentions can leave you with awareness but no traffic; optimising only for citations can send clicks while your brand name stays invisible. Visus tracks both so you can balance them.

FAQ
- Which should I prioritise—mentions or citations?
It depends on your goal. Prioritise mentions to build category awareness in zero-click answers; prioritise citations when you need measurable referral traffic and source attribution. Most brands want both to rise together.
- Can an answer cite me without mentioning my brand?
Yes. An assistant can link your domain as a source while describing the fact generically, so the URL appears but the brand name does not stand out. That is why Visus records them as two separate signals.
