Why ChatGPT recommends you but Gemini doesn't

Because AI citation is provider-specific. Each engine pulls from different source types - ChatGPT leans on Wikipedia and encyclopedic content, Perplexity heavily on Reddit and fresh community posts, Google AI Overviews on YouTube and multi-modal content - and only a small fraction of domains get cited by more than one. There is no single "AI visibility" number. Winning one engine and being invisible in another is normal, not a bug.

You check ChatGPT and you are named as a top recommendation. You check Gemini for the same query and you do not exist. Nothing on your website changed between the two. This confuses a lot of people into thinking their measurement is broken. It is not - the engines genuinely disagree, and understanding why is the whole game.

Each engine trusts different sources

The big AI answer engines were built differently and pull from different corners of the web. Broadly, based on citation studies across the major engines:

EngineLeans heavily onWhat that rewards
ChatGPTWikipedia, encyclopedic and tier-1 mediaEstablished entity presence, being a known brand
PerplexityReddit and fresh, dated community contentActive community presence, frequent posting
Google AI OverviewsYouTube and multi-modal contentVideo, structured content, existing Google authority

The overlap between them is small - only around one in ten domains cited by one major engine is also cited by another. So the sites that win ChatGPT are often not the sites that win Perplexity. If you have invested heavily in one channel, you have effectively optimised for one engine without realising it.

The other reason: it moves day to day

Even within a single engine, the same prompt can return different brands on different days. One frozen-question-set test across providers showed a brand cited in roughly 27% of ChatGPT answers, 9% of Claude answers, and 0% of Gemini answers - on the same questions, the same week, with no site changes. That spread between providers is far wider than the normal day-to-day noise, which is exactly the point: the gap is the engines, not randomness.

What to do about it

  1. Measure per engine, never blended. Track ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews separately. A single "AI score" hides the only insight you can act on.
  2. Fix the shared foundation first. Entity clarity, crawlable answer-ready content, schema, and visible proof help across all engines. This is the 80% that is just good SEO.
  3. Then target the gap. Invisible in Perplexity? It rewards Reddit and fresh, dated content - so a genuine community presence and regular publishing matter. Weak in Google AI Overviews? Video and multi-modal content help. Missing from ChatGPT? That is usually an entity-presence problem - be a known, corroborated brand across Wikipedia-grade and tier-1 sources.
  4. Build consensus, not just one strong page. Being mentioned consistently across many independent sources is what carries you into answers - more than any single ranking.

The honest takeaway: you are not chasing one AI ranking, you are building presence across several engines that each read a different slice of the web. Know which engine you are winning, which you are losing, and why - then work the specific gap.
