Google AI Overview checker: how to see if your business appears (and fix it)
Search for your business category and location in Google — for example, "best accountants in [your city]". If a blue AI Overview box appears at the top and your business isn't in it, you have an AI Overview gap. Run a free Visus audit to score your page's AI Overview readiness and see exactly what to fix.
Note. Google controls which sources appear in AI Overviews. Visus audits the on-page signals that influence inclusion — it does not guarantee your business will appear in any AI Overview.
What is a Google AI Overview?
Google AI Overviews are the AI-generated summaries that appear above organic results for many search queries. They were previously called SGE (Search Generative Experience). When someone searches "best plumber in Sheffield" or "accountant for limited companies", they may see an AI-generated answer with source links — before any paid or organic results.
For businesses, appearing in an AI Overview means your brand is visible at the very top of the page. Not appearing means competitors who do appear absorb those buyers before they scroll to your organic or paid listing.
How to check if you appear — manual method
- Open Google in a private / incognito window (removes personalisation)
- Search your buyer-intent query: "best [your service] in [your city]" or "[your trade] near [your town]"
- Look for the blue AI Overview box at the top of the results page
- If it appears, read it and check whether your business is mentioned or cited as a source
- If you're not mentioned, note which businesses are — these are your AI Overview competitors
Run the same test on several queries. AI Overviews don't appear for every search, but they consistently appear for "best [service type] near me" and "how to find a [profession] in [location]" queries.
Why businesses don't appear in Google AI Overviews
Google selects AI Overview sources based on a combination of on-page and off-page signals. The most common reasons a business is excluded:
No answer-ready content
Your pages describe your services but don't directly answer the questions buyers ask Google. AI Overviews quote sources that answer the query in the first sentence.
Weak E-E-A-T signals
Google's quality system looks for experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trust. No author name, no credentials, no press mentions — these reduce selection likelihood.
Missing schema markup
Structured data (LocalBusiness, FAQPage, HowTo) tells Google what type of content you have, making it easier to match to query intent.
No third-party corroboration
Reviews, Google Business Profile completeness, and directory citations help Google verify that your business is real and trustworthy enough to cite publicly.

The fixes that have the highest impact on AI Overview inclusion, in order:
- Add a direct-answer paragraph to your homepage. State clearly: what you do, where, who for, and your key differentiator — in 2–3 sentences that could be quoted verbatim.
- Add FAQPage schema. Structure your FAQ as Question/Answer pairs in JSON-LD. Google can pull these directly into AI Overviews.
- Add LocalBusiness or Organization schema with your full name, address, phone, and opening hours.
- Build your Google Business Profile. Complete every field, get reviews, post regularly. GBP completeness directly influences local AI Overview selection.
- Add author information to your blog posts and service pages — a named person with credentials signals expertise.
- Get listed in authoritative directories — industry associations, local councils, trade bodies — these are the citations Google treats as corroborating evidence.

How long does it take?
On-page changes — schema markup, FAQ content, a clear business description — are typically picked up by Googlebot within 2–4 weeks. Building third-party signals (reviews, citations) takes 4–12 weeks. Most businesses that apply the full set of fixes start seeing AI Overview appearances within 6–8 weeks.
Frequently asked questions
-
How do I check if my business appears in Google AI Overviews?
Search your buyer-intent query in Google (incognito). Look for the AI Overview box at the top. If competitors appear but you don't, run a free Visus audit to see which signals are missing.
-
What signals does Google use for AI Overviews?
E-E-A-T, answer-ready content that can be quoted directly, schema markup, Google Business Profile completeness, and third-party citations. The Visus audit checks all of these.
-
Is AI Overview visibility different from ranking on page one?
Yes. A page ranking on page two can appear in an AI Overview if it answers the query clearly. Conversely, a page one result can be excluded if it lacks answer-ready structure.
-
How long does it take to appear in Google AI Overviews?
On-page fixes: 2–4 weeks. External signals: 4–12 weeks. Full set of fixes: typically 6–8 weeks before AI Overview appearances begin.
-
Do AI Overviews reduce organic traffic?
AI Overviews can reduce clicks to pages by answering queries in the overview itself. However, being cited as a source maintains brand visibility and can drive direct traffic. Not appearing means being invisible when AI answers show above all paid and organic results.
