What is agent readiness — and why your site needs it in 2026
Agent readiness is how prepared your website is for autonomous AI agents — like ChatGPT’s agent mode and Perplexity Comet — to access, parse, trust, and act on it when they are completing a task for a user.
For a decade you optimised for humans. More recently you started optimising for AI answers — being cited when someone asks ChatGPT for a recommendation. Agent readiness is the next layer: being the site an AI agent can actually use — filling a form, comparing options, starting a checkout — on a real customer’s behalf.
Why this is suddenly urgent
2026 is the year agentic browsers went mainstream. Perplexity Comet and ChatGPT’s agent mode can now browse, compare, and transact for their users. Can the agent lift a clean answer? Question-style headings and self-contained 40–100 word answer blocks let an agent extract a confident response instead of guessing across paragraphs.
4. Trust and identity
Can the agent verify who you are? Linked profiles (sameAs), a clear author/byline, and consistent name-address-phone details let an agent confirm your identity before it relies on your claims.
5. Transaction integrity
Can the agent safely complete a purchase? Prices and availability in Offer schema — and consistent between the product page and checkout. Agents flag a price gap between page and checkout as deceptive and abandon the task.
6. Protocol interoperability
Does your site speak the agent protocols? This is llms.txt (a machine-readable summary) and the emerging AGENTS.md (how agents should interact with you). Early adopters are almost invisibly rare — which is exactly why publishing them is a fast, cheap win.
